Modern Japanese Restaurant「平河町 かなや」のテーマは“East meets West”和敬洋讃。日本最古のリゾートホテル、日光金谷ホテルの系譜にあたるレストランからの依頼は意外にも伝統よりも新しさだった。私はタイルの魅力をもっと深く知りたくて、モロッコの工房で2年間修行したことがある。モロッコはアラビア語でマグレブ、日の沈む国の意味を持つ。日出ずる国からの若者を温かく迎えてくれた日の沈む国へ恩返しがしたい。“East meets West”和敬洋讃は私がやるべき仕事だった。迷わずモロッコの彩釉タイルモザイクであるゼッリージュの技法を想起させるデザインを提案した。壁面の欄間には鬼怒川金谷ホテルで見た格子戸を、エントランスの床には創業者ジョンカナヤが愛した白百合カサブランカの花をモチーフにした。モロッコの職人も驚くほど手間をかけ、愛情をかけ作ったタイル。かなやのおもてなしが詰まっている。

The theme of the Modern Japanese Restaurant Hirakawachō Kanaya is “East meets West” – fusing Asian & Western and Traditional & Modern. The request from the restaurant, which is descended from Japan’s oldest resort hotel, the Nikkō Kanaya Hotel, was surprisingly more innovative than traditional. In the past, I spent 2 years training in a Moroccan workshop to learn deeper about the quality of tiles. Morocco is written maghreb in Arabic, meaning “place where the sun sets”. I wanted to repay the country of the setting sun for warmly welcoming a young man from the land of the rising sun. “East meets West” was the perfect theme for me to undertake. Without hesitation, I proposed a design reminiscent of the zellije technique, a coloured glazed tile mosaic from Morocco. For the ranma (transom) on the wall, I used a lattice door seen at the Kinugawa Kanaya Hotel, and for the entrance floor, I used a motif of the white Casablanca lily loved by the founder, John Kanaya. The tiles were made with enough care and love to even surprise Moroccan craftspeople. This represents Kanaya’s hospitality.
